grace hotel @ sydney

hello πŸ™‚

it’s been a while, haha! my fiance bought me this domain name so that we could both get into this seriously! we’ve also bought a new camera (his name is sunny!) so we could take better quality pics and share it here! and now, let’s get on to my first post in AGES!

it’s been a long time since i’ve dined at a hotel. grace hotel is tucked in a quiet corner just a short walk from the station. it was a cold and rainy night but upon entering the hotel, i was greeted by warm smiles from staff at the reception area.

the dinner buffet at grace hotel is on the second floor. we decided to do a pre-dinner workout and took the stairs! once we got to the buffet area, we were again greeted by friendly staff and upon presenting our voucher, we were led to a table by the window.

there weren’t many different selection of food. the seafood area had prawns, smoked salmon, diy salad bar (with bacon, scrambled eggs, croutons, salad dressing and more), potato salad, seafood salad, and this amazing pasta which had bocconcini and broccoli. the hot food section was limited but satisfying. at the carvery station, only lamb was being served (which i don’t eat). other interesting stuff included tempura barramundi, chicken with eggplant and bread crumbed scallops.

as usual, we overate so we had to rest for about 10 – 20 minutes before moving onto dessert. but before we did, fiance walked past a really cool looking coffee machine and got me a hot chocolate… it was a pretty awesome hot chocolate! i only had a tiny slice of cheese, a little cake and some ice cream for dessert. i was really pushing it after the hot chocolate but how could anyone ignore all you can eat ice cream!

overall, we really enjoyed our night at grace hotel’s buffet. the service was great and the food was satisfying. though we think the hot food selection would need some improvement with winter coming. after the meal, we enjoyed a 15 minute sit on their super soft sofas while resisting the urge to fall asleep. i was so sure we were going to get kicked out!

so that’s it for today. i’m going to try harder to blog more frequently!

another update: i’m still alive!

i’m still alive!

a little update on my life…

i’ve started working full time since the end of april. this is my first proper job (not including my 10 months of hell working at a certain fast food chain)! i haven’t lost my passion for wagyu but i’m just finding it so hard to keep a blog while working and trying to continue my fitness routine. i guess it’s hard to fit everything in when i’m working an hour away from work but maybe i can update this blog at work during lunch or something? i’ll try tomorrow πŸ™‚

wasabi bistro @ darlinghurst

hi all! i’ve been updating my blog so frequently because i have nothing to do. i’ve finished my degree in november last year and worked for a few months but now i’m unemployed! oh well. i’m sure i’ll find a job eventually!

anyway, as i mentioned, this post will be about wasabi bistro at surry hills and their fail-gyu steak and how they managed to redeem themselves the second time i went. i think i should split this post into two entries.

my fiance bought two wasabi bistro vouchers for us earlier and we decided to go there for one of our special occasions. the voucher we got comes with tuna tartar, steamed gyoza, salmon tataki, tempura, choice of sushi roll, two mains with miso soup and finally two ice creams of our choice.

wb
here’s the tuna tartar. i don’t like raw fish so my fiance had most of it. i picked out bits and pieces of potato and ate that. there’s a very generous serving of red and black caviar and i had most of that. i remember the black caviar was a lot saltier than the red one. on the other hand, there was too little sauce which is a pity because it was delicious. i’m not sure what the yellow sauce is but the brown sauce is some kind of sweet miso like sauce.

wb2
next up were the steamed gyoza. these were pretty good. we loved the sauce (soy sauce with dashi and mirin?) that comes with it.

wb3

then came the salmon tataki (seared salmon). my fiance loved these and said they were perfect. pity about the portion though. there were only 4 pieces (if i remember correctly). and once again, i didn’t have this because i don’t eat raw fish. i tried raw salmon once upon a time and absolutely hated it. i thought it was slimy. i guess i was traumatised by that incident.

wb4

the tempura! i don’t usually like battered stuff but i like tempura because of the light batter which doesn’t make me sick after two bites. the tempura was so nicely done. the dish contained a piece of prawn, eggplant (which my fiance hates), sweet potato or pumpkin (we can never tell in tempura), and some other veggies. there wasn’t enough sauce again but the waiter kindly got us some more.

wb5
we ordered the seared salmon sushi roll (dragon roll? i forgot). once again, my fiance ate most of it because of the salmon. i ate some of the rice rolls minus the avocado and cucumber.

wb6
finally, after 5 courses, my wagyu steak came. at first sight, it seemed a little cooked and i was surprised by the sauce as i like my wagyu without any sauce.

wb7
here’s what the inside of the steak looked like. i could find any traces of wagyu ‘juice’ (aka fat, grease, marbling etc). as i begin to freak out a little, i reassured myself that everything will be okay. i took one chunk of the steak and realised that the steak was over seasoned with pepper. there was absolutely no juice coming out from the meat. i thought to myself, “are you kidding me? this is definitely not wagyu!!!”. it was FAIL-GYU. i was so disappointed and gave most of my beef steak to my fiance and spent the rest of the dinner grumbling about how disappointed i was. when the ice cream came, i was feeling better because i LOVE ice cream. i ordered the green tea ice cream but was too unhappy to take a photo. after dessert, we grumbled to each other about what we were going to do about the other voucher. we bought it just for the wagyu and was utterly disappointed…

to be continued…

riverview farms: wagyu sausages

hello all! as promised, here’s my review on some wagyu sausages my aunt got from costco πŸ™‚

rv1

i don’t know how much it was but i’m guessing it was about $7 or $8. at first sight, they look like ordinary beef sausages. the back of the package says 80% meat (o.o) and the front says 100% australian wagyu. i wonder what the other 20% consists of. maybe fat? oh well! i won’t think about it!

rv2rv3rv4rv5

they were pretty easy to cook. the instructions says to not pierce them. i’m guessing because the juice will come out if you do. when i was just about done with cooking them, i noticed that the juices were oozing out. i panicked a little because i was worried it won’t be as yummy. when i cut open the first one, just to make sure it’s fully cooked, i noticed a lot of oil came out! boy, was i excited. i took my first bite and expected juice to burst out but sadly, that didn’t happen. i have no idea why but i’m guessing i may have over cooked them just a little πŸ™

these sausages are heavily seasoned. my fiance loved them. actually, i’m not a fan of sausages but seeing as they were wagyu, i was dying to try them. to me, they taste like other sausages but a little juicier. i’m sure sausage fans would love these wagyu sausages but sadly, these were not my cup of tea…

coming up next: fail-gyu steak and redemption!

burgerlicious @ kings cross

hi all! *completely ignoring the fact that she hasn’t blogged in 4 months*

yesterday, i went to burgerlicious in kings cross (with a voucher!) and tried the MOAB burger. honestly it was a little disappointing. after walking from central to townhall and then finally reaching kings cross on a hot and stuffy day, we sat down on the wooden chairs and dumped our stuff on the wooden table. i’ve got to say i absolutely love their tables; the mahogany wood and cleanliness of it was just wonderful!

bl2
the MOAB burger consists of wagyu beef, grilled onions, pineapple, bacon, free-range egg, cheese, beetroot relish, tomato, lettuce, special sauce and ketchup. my fiance went up to order our burgers but i didn’t want pineapple, beetroot relish or tomato. we were starving by the time we got there, thanks to the horrible stuffiness and long walk. the wait seemed like so long but it was probably just about 5 – 10 minutes. we needed to wash our hands but there wasn’t a toilet in site around that shopping centre. our burgers came after we made use of some tissue and water we brought along to clean our hands. i was so excited!

bl3
the burger looked so delicious! to my surprise, my chips had chicken salt sprinkled on them. awesome! after taking the photo above, i opened up my burger to check if they remembered my order. although they didn’t put the beetroot relish, tomato and pineapple, i was very saddened to see that they have also left out my cheese and grilled onions… i stole some of my fiance’s cheese and realised it was cheddar cheese. a particularly strong type too. i guess i was thankful they left it out or it may have made my burger worst.

bl
i thought the wagyu pattie was a little tough and lacking juice. the chips were good. they got a little sickening as i was quite full after my burger! my fiance enjoyed his burger but was disappointed that i was disappointed. oh well!

bestwagyu.com

hi readers! as i mentioned in my last post, i bought some wagyu online from http://www.bestwagyu.com; 4 x 250grams wagyu sirloin steaks with marble score of 9 and 150grams of smoked wagyu silverside.

general

i think the website is pretty good although i had some issues with payment. however, it was sorted out promptly. i bought the wagyu around the end of august because they had free delivery for purchases of $100 or over. the delivery was prompt as well – i received a call from the delivery man and he asked if anyone would be available to pick up the meat. bestwagyu.com is also a part of the australian association of wagyu.

smoked wagyu silverside

i really wanted to try this because it was quite cheap; $6.50 for 150grams. i really liked the strong smokey flavour. the texture is good; soft and tender. however, i couldn’t really taste the wagyu and i thought smoked ham would probably taste the same (minus the tenderness).

bw1

sirloin steaks

i got the 4 sirloin steaks for $100 as it was special. it would have been at least $130. awesomeness! when i first got it, i was worried about the colour.

bw2
as you can see, it’s quite dark but look at that marbling! after doing some research on the internet, i’ve found that the colour is due to vacumming. we decided to eat the steaks last thursday and we grilled them on a portable grill i bought on ebay years ago hehe!

bw3

look at my babies on the grill!bw4here they are again, almost done!

bw5

here is one of my babies, plated and ready to make me proud! we served it along with some veggies and mushrooms. we also had some sweet potato fries. they were so crunchy ^.^

bw6

the first bite i had of my wagyu steak i almost fainted. i did shudder a little. it was so rich and buttery. the juices leaked out upon sinking my teeth in. it was cooked to medium rare. i usually don’t like anything less than medium-well done but i make exceptions for wagyu πŸ˜› i’m so glad i bought this because i haven’t had wagyu steak this awesome in such a long long time. look at this!

bw7

bw8
my favourite photo!
bw9
take two in hdr!
sadly, all good times must end. chunk by chunk, my wagyu steak disappeared quickly and now, i can hardly remember how good it tasted already πŸ™ i would definately buy from bestwagyu.com again but only when they are having specials or free delivery so that my fiance could try some too. he isn’t a big fan of beef but once he tries this, i’m sure he would join me in satisfying my wagyu cravings β™₯

sakae yakiniku house @ eastwood

so it was father’s day yesterday and since restaurants would be all booked out, we decided to go out on friday night instead along with my auntie and uncle. the decision of where to eat was left up to me and my brother. i thought to myself “OMG why don’t we go to a buffet with wagyu? then i can stuff myself with all the wagyu i want!”

in my first google search, i found a place in crows nest called ‘rengaya’. but it was way too expensive (since it was going to be my brother, my fiance and my treat) and a bit too far for us. so i searched more and found another place called sakae yakiniku house at eastwood. this place was cheaper and a little closer but i thought it was still a little too expensive. then, after more googling, i found a place called kaizen bbq at macquarie. this place was just $30 per person. i was ecstatic. BUT when fiance called them up, they said they don’t do buffets anymore. MAJOR LET DOWN T_T i sulked for awhile then decided to just go with sakae yakiniku house which was $43.80 per person.

we got the standard buffet and since they have a time limit, we sat down and stressed over what to order first. well, i obviously yelled out to order the wagyu rib fingers, wagyu thin skirt and the beef loin (just to see if it tasted good). i could not afford to fill my stomach out with non-wagyu food! oh and unfortunately, there won’t be many photos because i was too busy stuffing my face ^.^

syh1

i think this was the combination namul but it looks nothing like the photo!
syh
the wagyu thin skirt, wagyu rib fingers and prawns
oh wait. i did try other food – beef ribs, fish cake, bibimbap, soba, furikake don, tuna & almond salad, tofu salad, edamame, jap chae and the ice cream. the fish cake was pretty standard. the soba, salads and the edamame were good. the furikake don was really pretty and tasty! there was a piece of mentaiko on it which suprized me! i’ve never seen them but i’ve only just recently heard about them. mentaiko are basically the sac of eggs from a type of fish. i’ve never had it and i don’t think i would ever have it because i heard it’s very very fishy. but it looked so cool haha!

syh2

squid and fish cake

takoyaki (at least what’s left of them)

syh3

so by the time we were almost done with ordering/stressing/eating/grilling/eating about 5 plates of wagyu rib fingers alone, we decided to get ice cream. i saved some extra space for dessert desserts; i had two and a half cups of ice cream HEHE.

syh4

green tea soft serve…mmm πŸ™‚

to sum things up, the food was alright. althought some were a let down such as the wagyu thin skirt. service was prompt most of the times. some of our orders were forgotten till just before dessert. i think they should just get rid of the whole ordering system and put food out for us to get instead. or instead of that, get rid of the time limit. we were stressing about running out of time instead of enjoying the meal. the wagyu rib fingers were definately the highlight of the night for me – so fatty and soft! fiance’s favourite were the takoyakis. he probably had 2 – 3 plates on his own!

πŸ™‚

ps. i regret not taking more photos…

coming up next: i bought some wagyu online!

pepper lunch @ haymarket

hello πŸ™‚

i was itching to update my blog but have no idea on what to blog about. then i remembered i went to pepper lunch for the first time a few weeks ago, near darling harbour. my memory from eating at pepper lunch is still quite fresh. unfortunately, this post is wagyu free πŸ™ but fret not! for this post is not beef free! we got a $9 for two sizzling beef specials with a can of drink or miso soup. we got the drink because i drink miso soup at all the time anyway. it was definitely value for money! we were actually allowed to change the meal but you have to add money. i was prepared to to change mine to wagyu but they said we’re not allowed… boohoo.

pl1

mine *drools* with cheese and not shallots. i added some of the sauce – i think it was sweet soy or some onion sauce. at first, i didn’t know i had to mix it up so i sat there watching my meal sizzle. then one of the girls working there came up to me and told me i have to mix it up thoroughly so that the sauce and butter in the middle of the rice is spread evenly. so i quickly tossed my rice about, hoping it wasn’t too late. fyi, i don’t like shallots because of the bitter taste πŸ™‚

pl

fiance’s. his was way too peppery. it tasted so different from mine but it was still good (i helped him finish it!).

we have another voucher for pepper lunch and i can’t wait to take more photos!
